Last week, I took out my American flags and all my summer red, white, and blue decorations. For many, these items stay out all year. For me, I really get the patriotic decorations out in the month of May. Of course, Memorial Day is the first onset of everything patriotic. Plus, it’s the launch of summer for many.

This is yet another reason why I love the month of May. In the kitchen, we love to make patriotic red, white, and blue goodies. Plus, almost all of our patriotic foods involve the kids as well. We have a staple flag recipe that the kids know how to make. It’s a favorite of theirs because it has their favorite fruits and marshmallows. We make the flag recipe for Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day. In addition to those days we make it for family reunions and parties. Not only is it good, but it is really pretty. I can guarantee you this flag recipe will be the hit of your party.

For this Memorial Day, have some fun in the kitchen and get the kids involved. You can let them snack a little while they are making the skewers for the flag. At the same time, you can reflect on what Memorial Day is all about and educate them about our wonderful service men and women. It’s a great time to reflect on history all while having some fun in the kitchen!
